Salary: $38,000-$45,000

SUMMARY:

The Greening of Detroit is a non-profit organization focused on enhancing the quality of life for Detroiters by planting trees, providing job training and involving our youth in the education of the natural environment. The organization is currently seeking an Community Education Coordinator (CEC) to work collaboratively with the City of Detroit to engage youth and adults in the environmental stewardship of their communities.

The Community Education Coordinator (CEC) is a full time position responsible for the development and implementation of Community Education Programming and Community Outreach Events throughout the City of Detroit. ThisisauniquepositionworkingwiththeCityofDetroit’sGeneralServiceDepartment.Thepositionrequires excellent communication skills, familiarity with the City of Detroit neighborhoods, established network within the seven Detroit Council Districts, love for the outdoors, and a creative, problem solving mentality. Along with implementing programming, the CEC will be responsible for assisting City (GSD) staff with a variety of activities related to community outreach and programming.

Position Responsibilities include:

  • ●  Engage youth and adults and the public in developing environmental awareness

  • ●  Develop and implement the Shade Salon outreach and education series and enriching science-based lessons in

    both traditional and non-traditional education settings

  • ●  Schedule, plan and implement community outreach events at various locations throughout Detroit

  • ●  Develop and implement interactive, tree themed activities at community outreach events

  • ●  Develop creative outreach tools to gain community input and inform art installation recommendations

  • ●  Compile community feedback and produce comprehensive, easily digestible material to share outcomes

  • ●  Take part in the selection of a community artist and work collaboratively to bring art installations to life

  • ●  Thrive in a collaborative and positive work environment

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    Individuals from the Detroit and Metro Detroit area with a demonstrated interest in education, community organization, natural resources or environmental studies, forestry, and/or horticulture and have had experience working with youth and adults in both formal and non-formal settings. Individuals who find the most success are typically motivated self-starters with a passion for guiding and inspiring environmental stewardship in others.
